7th June - Wild Skills Series: Invertebrate & Bird ID
Join me for a full day of hands-on wildlife exploration as we dive into the fascinating worlds of invertebrates and birds. We’ll begin with a guided walk through the diverse habitats surrounding Badaguish, from ancient woodlands to wetland areas, discovering how different species thrive in these unique environments.
Next, we’ll get up close with some of the smaller creatures that play a vital role in the ecosystem. Using nets and trays, we’ll carry out a pond dip, searching for dragonfly nymphs, water beetles, and other freshwater invertebrates. Then, we’ll turn our focus to the woodlands, using sweep nets to uncover the hidden world of insects among the trees and plants. You’ll learn how to identify key species and understand their importance to the wider environment.
After a break for lunch, we’ll head back into the forest, shifting our attention to birds. We’ll explore how to identify different species by sight and sound, picking up tips on recognising calls and songs. Along the way, we’ll look for feeding signs such as pinecone remains from crossbills, owl pellets, and tree damage left by woodpeckers. By the end of the session, you’ll have a better understanding of Scotland’s birdlife and the key signs that reveal their presence in the wild.
This event is perfect for nature lovers of all experience levels, whether you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your wildlife identification skills. Come along, explore, and gain new insights into the incredible biodiversity of the Cairngorms!
Only 10 spaces available.
